Basic make-up tips and product suggestions for lazy mamas

Fact about me: I don’t wear makeup anymore. Another fact about me: I should. Sleep deprivation, the inability to stick to a healthy diet and lack of exercise is taking its toll on my skin. Of course the ramifications are psychological too so when I look in the mirror I am not happy with the face staring back at me. Seeing as a good night sleep won’t be taking place anytime soon and exercising is not in the foreseeable future, I am investing in some makeup and most importantly, great makeup tips because I can be incredibly lazy when it comes to it. So with the help of two mama friends who always look impeccable and obviously love makeup, I have put together a list of basic makeup tips/products for lazy mothers.

Makeup routine when you’re running late in the morning:

Eyebrows, bronzer, mascara.

Favourite product:

Iconic pigment sticks. Quick and easy to use for high coverage so no need for extra concealer and powder.

Favourite eyeliner:

Charlotte Tilbury’s Feline Flick. It’s easy to use and doesn’t smudge. I find it makes a huge difference to my entire look.

The secret to lasting makeup:

Setting spray. I use MAC Fix Plus.

Basics every woman should have in her makeup bag:

Concealer, eyebrow pencil, lipstick, blusher, bronzer, mascara, eyeliner.

Tips for applying makeup:

Use a setting spray. Your makeup won’t budge. And a sponge for applying foundation.

Online purchases:

I buy everything online except for foundation. You need to try that on. Websites tried and tested are: Feel Unique, Look Fantastic, Beauty Bay.

Cheapest make up product:

Maybelline Concealer.

Most expensive makeup product:

Estee Lauder foundation

In which order should my makeup be applied:

Primer, eyebrows, makeup, concealer, set with powder, bronzer, blush, eyeliner, mascara, setting spray.

Favourite mascara:

Bobbi Brown’s Smokey Eye mascara.

Favourite primer:

Max Factor or Hourglass primer. i can’t live without it. It evens skin tone and makes your makeup last all day.

Tips for using primer:

Leave it on for ten minutes before applying your makeup. And always prime your eyelids and blot with loose powder for a better result.

Any other tips for when I’m in a hurry:

Just go with a concealer. Use a lighter one around the eye area and a darker one for whatever you want to cover on your face.

Tips for purchasing makeup for oily skin:

Go for a matte foundation. Estée Lauder’s Double Wear is great.

Lipstick lasting tips:

Use a lip pencil. It doesn’t have to be the same colour as your lipstick. Charlotte Tilbury’s Lipcheat pencil and EOS Lip Balm over the pencil. Use the pencil just above and below the lips for a fuller look.

Tips for a night out:

Always use primer and setting spray. Also to give your eyeshadow more pigment spray a bit of setting spray on your brush. And if you’re using eyeliner, by applying eyeshadow you can make sure it won’t smudge.

Contouring:

Suck your cheeks in and follow the dip towards your mouth for the dark shade. For this, I use the pigment sticks, just a shade lighter or darker according to what I need.

Extra tips:

Check out Chloe Morello, favourite makeup blogger on YouTube. She’s awesome and funny!

What do you think? Tons of useful tips, right? One thing I have taken from the two girls is that I need to watch more YouTube makeup tutorials if I want to really get good at this. You know, I haven’t always been lazy in the makeup department. Over the years I have discovered some classics I have come to depend upon and have re-purchased. Here they are:

Concealer: Bobbi Brown’s Creamy concealer kit and YSL’s Touche Eclat, which is more of a highlighter, are favourites. Right now I’m also loving Benefit’s Boi-ing.

Makeup brushes: Again Bobbi Brown. I spent a small fortune years ago on the whole set and have been using them ever since.

Lipstick: I always go back to MAC’s Ruby Woo for a classic matte red.

Mascara: I’ve tried many over the years and liked a few but the one I go back to everytime especially when I’m on a tight budget is Maybelline’s Colossal.

Which makeup products do you rely on? Any tips for applying and looking fabulous are always welcome.
