Motherhood

One week before my due date: What I’ve been up to

I wiped out the word ‘May’ from our big blackboard wall calendar and wrote ‘June’. My birth month. The month I, papa, Georgie, family and friends have all been waiting for. And as I jotted down the words ‘due date’ I felt an expected pang of anxiety but also a sense of relief.

As much as I am dying to meet this little dude and hold him in my arms, this is my second baby. Therefore I am fully aware of everything that comes with such a happy arrival. Sleepless nights, endless dirty nappies, constant feedings and very little time for anything else. Being aware means that over the past week I have taken the time to do the kind of stuff I soon won’t be able to do so easily.

Got a mani-pedi, the kind where they massage your feet for ages and give them a good scrub.

– Booked two, not one, full body massages. My feet and hands are swollen and killing me so I reckon I deserve it.

Went to a concert with a friend, a classical music concert that I really enjoyed.

Went out for dinner with my girlfriends and had a good old belly laugh.

Got my hair trimmed. I rarely visit the hair salon. In fact I hadn’t been since January when I had some low lights done but it was time to rid myself of those ugly split ends.

– Failed to book a facial but have been spending time in the evenings, putting on masks and taking my skin regime that extra mile.

Put my feet up and even snoozed on the couch on more than one occasion.

Skipped laundry one night.

Binge-watching Vikings. Violent and shocking, as an expectant mother it definitely makes me grateful of modern health care.

Paid a cleaner to clean the house, thoroughly.

– Had friends over for a Sunday barbecue.

But most importantly, and not just during this last week, I have been spending more quality time with my boys. Both papa and Georgie. Extra hugs and kisses, more one-on-one conversations and time alone.

So ….now I’m ready. Bring it on!
