The making of Soutzoukos: A series of photos


Taken five months ago during a family visit to the village of Handria, in the Pitsilia area, where a friend’s parents live, these photos depict the making of soutzouko, a favourite traditional sweet.

Watching the process and even pulling my sleeves up to have a go was an amazing experience. Traditions and village gatherings such as these were never part of my childhood since none of my grandparents lived in Cyprus, so I adore them and find them fascinating.

1. Yiayia Rena and Georgie on the day he turned four.

2. So proud of papa. He won first place.

3. My sister made more cinnamon rolls this weekend. I may have to kill her.

5. Most Saturday and Sunday mornings, we find these little lego gifts outside our bedroom door. Could he be any more adorable?

1. That morning when the sky was gorgeous and not blue.

2. He knows the numbers and is recognising letters. So proud!

3. Afternoon shadows and lights.

4. He dressed up for a Carnival Party at school. I thought of this costume one night and almost woke him up to ask him what he thinks. I hoped he would say ‘yes’. Turns out my son is just as obsessed with Superman as I am.

The Parent Hood// 08

1. This month, I decided to give my regular Pilates classes a break and head to the gym for the first time in years. Change is good especially when you’re working muscles. If I’m putting time and energy into something I like to do it well so I’ve been looking up pre-workout smoothies and foods. If you work out, even if that is 30 minutes on the treadmill like me, you should check this link.

In the kitchen// Emilia’s cinnamon rolls

Like me, my sister is an avid baker. Unlike me, she’s also a brilliant cake designer. You can see her beautifully-crafted cakes for all occasions here. What she does is truly amazing since every single detail on her cakes is made, moulded and rolled by hand. More on this in a future post because right now I really need to tell you about these cinnamon rolls she made last week. They’re such a classic and to be honest, never have been my favourite but that has definitely changed.
