The one sleep tip for kids that everyone agrees on

If there’s one thing that all parents need and want more than anything, it’s sleep. Most of us spend hours researching ways to help our little ones go to sleep. And stay asleep. I am definitely one of those parents. I have probably read every single sentence, article and book on the matter of sleep and there’s one thing I have noticed that they all have in common. One single piece of advice.

Bring up the word ‘sleep’ in a mum group on Facebook or over coffee with other mamas and you’re bound to be in for a heated discussion to say the least. There are those who swear by sleep training and various other similar methods and those who don’t and chose to find alternative ways to deal with sleepless nights.

All of that is absolutely fine. As long as you stick to the single golden rule everyone agrees on: a routine and a set time.

It really is that simple. Kids thrive when they follow a routine. And why wouldn’t they? Our whole lives are based on routine.

Dr Marie Hartwell- Walker, in this article said: “Repetition and structure help children feel safe. Bedtime declares that the day is over. When you are loving and firm about when it is time for bed, you are building your child’s confidence in their world. Repetition for young children is comforting- ever wonder why they want the same story over and over again? The repetition of the getting ready for bed routine (getting into pyjamas, brushing teeth, a story, a hug, goodnight) let’s your child know what to expect and helps him or her feel secure. ”

From my own experience I can say that I wholeheartedly agree. Georgie has had the same bedtime routine since he was six months old- with minor changes occurring over the years due to age. I can count the times we’ve had to struggle with his routine on one hand because he’s always know what to expect and when to expect it.

So whatever your sleeping arrangements are, aim for a set time and a predictable routine to ensure a tear-free and fuss-free bedtime.

If you want to read up on how to get your child into a routine I highly recommend Dr Marc Weissbluth’s Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child.  It helped me understand so much about the nature of sleep.
