Food, let's play

yummy time

I promised myself i wouldn’t give in to all that baby talk and ridiculous words some people come up with when talking to kids – especially here in Cyprus- but when we’re on the subject of food none other than yummy sounds appropriate.

Anyway, Georgie doesn’t like long meals. Like most kids his age he thrives on snacks. I remember losing my patience when he wouldn’t sit down to eat his lunch after three to four hours of having breakfast. Just let him be, my pediatrician said. Offer it to him later and he’ll probably eat it. Oh my how she was right. So basically what we do now is offer him something to eat every two hours. it could be a biscuit or spaghetti bolognese. Whatever it is he’ll usually eat it if he isn’t pressured and i’m not about to lose my mind.

so what does his diet involve? EVERYTHING! Really! He loves yoghurt so he’ll eat that with fruit – apples and pears usually- cornflakes, meat, chicken, vegetables- ranging from carrots to broccoli and spinach. Vegetables are so easy to work into kids’ diets. i don’t understand how mothers complain about their kids not eating their greens. Just hide them in some mashed potato or pasta or rice! Georgie loves it. Lately he’s surprised me by munching on edamame beans. Can you believe it?

What else? Lentils, salmon and prawns. Cheerios, weetabix and porridge mixed with bananas or apples. Porridge is actually a huge part of his diet and he’ll usually have it for supper, about an hour before bedtime.

I won’t lie. With a baby eating up to six times a day things can get hectic and I tend to cheat here and there by going out for lunch with him and then saving whatever he doesn’t eat for later. I even take a little bowl with a lid with me everywhere I go just in case. It’s not easy and it requires time and effort but I love doing it. Plus it’s made us steer away from evening pizza deliveries and souvlakia.

Because I love messing around with food and trying different things out I will be including more of Georgie’s diet in the next few weeks. And perhaps even getting around to taking more pictures of what I make.
