You get your nails done; they look all pretty and gorgeous, but then you break one. It’s a tale as old as time. Seriously, how often does something like this happen?! You splash the cash on a nice manicure, only to ruin it within a few days. It leaves you with two choices: sheepishly go back for an emergency manicure or deal with an annoying broken nail. Wouldn’t it be nice to stop your nails from breaking? While accidents do happen, most of us break our nails because they’re simply not strong enough. So, here are some tips to strengthen yours and avoid a disaster after your next manicure.
Make sure you use a gel polish
Kick things off by banishing the traditional nail polishes you know and love. They’re affordable, yet they tend to make your nails weaker and more brittle. Instead, opt for a gel polish – if your manicurist gives you an option, always pick this one. Gel polishes coat your nails and are cured under UV lights, which basically provides a protective barrier.
As such, they make your nails harder to break! You shouldn’t chip or crack a nail after putting your hand in your pocket or brushing against something hard. It makes the manicure worth it and ensures your nails look gorgeous for longer.
Keep your nails slightly shorter
The longer your nails get, the weaker they become. This will sound weird, but imagine your nails are a diving board. The shorter the board, the firmer the bounce – if the board gets longer, then it starts to dip easier and can snap. That’s why diving boards aren’t stupidly long; they’ll break in half when someone jumps on them.
The same happens to long nails – you’ll snap them with the slightest touch. So, keep your nails a bit shorter to preserve their health and strength. They’re harder to break, and you can always wear fake nails if you want to get some extra length now and then.
Try some nail supplements
Gel polishes protect your nails from the outside, but what if you looked for some inside protection?
Nail supplements – like biotin or collagen tablets – are designed to strengthen the cells that create nails. They work internally to encourage your body to produce harder and healthier nails. You probably only need one or two of these supplements a day, and you’ll notice the results within a few weeks.

Most of us never intentionally break our nails. You don’t go around slapping your nails against things to test their strength. It usually happens when you do something simple, but these tips will stop it from happening again.
