A little space all my own/ Where I work from

I wanted to show you a new little working space I carved out for myself in our living room. This post isn’t so much to show you how gorgeous it is and cosy and creative but more about how I just made it happen without too many expectations.

I have always wanted this, a little space all my own. Somewhere I could sit, focus and allow the creativity juices to flow. Being a mum, wife, writer, blogger and now a podcaster, the kitchen table wasn’t an option anymore. It lacked inspiration and motivation. Or rather I did. Being able to work from home has its perks, of course but it can be quite difficult to shrug off everything else that is going on within the household and focus on creating something especially when you’re surrounded by a mess that can easily accumulate in a house with three kids. Also, most times, you can only work in the evenings, which isn’t so bad I guess, especially if you have some cool lighting going on with a colourful neon sign, like these ones from Neon Mama.

This is my space now. And the kids know it. They aren’t allowed to sit at my desk or so much as take a pen from my pencil pot. That might sound silly to you and a bit extreme but if you have ever tried to be productive and professional whilst being a stay-at-home mum, then you will know exactly what I mean. Boundaries are required, especially when there’s a laptop, a nice plant pot, a ball and three kids involved.

Just before Christmas, we employed a carpenter to make us a long unit for the living room, where baskets and boxes of toys, books and a bunch of other stuff can be put away, out of sight and out of mind. I cannot begin to tell you how happy it makes me to be able to throw everything in there and just shut the cabinet door. Bliss! So the itty bitty console table we previously had, went upstairs into my bedroom and this desk-type table we had up there came downstairs thus becoming my desk.

The day we brought it downstairs and set it in this little corner of the living room, I couldn’t believe that I was finally creating what I had dreamt of for ages. Just like that it happened. All those Pinterest pictures and boards I had been staring at for years, all that time wondering where this special spot would be, where I could sit and write, create, get organised and productive. And suddenly there it was, happening before my very eyes.

My notebooks, all five of them now live in one place on my desk. There’s a personal one, a podcast one, a blog one, a gratitude one and my bedtime journal which actually lives upstairs by my bed. I currently have three books on rotation by the way that I might write about soon. The photo of me and Georgie is one of my favourites. We took it in Vienna when he was 5 years old and I was 7 months pregnant with James and I think I will always remember the most awesome brunch we had that day. Also on my desk, that beautiful knitted coaster made for me by my darling godson.

This little space all my own has made a huge difference in my life. And I am not even exaggerating. even though I know very well that it’s a state of mind, it has made me more productive, more organised, more motivated and actually happier. Just looking at it makes me want to be there and do what I love.
