old and loved

One day I took a look around my parents’ house and realised there were certain pieces of furniture that I fancied. Not all are particularly old but sentimental and my kind of style nonetheless. An armchair, a stool and a cabinet have now found a home here, in my new home, and I can’t tell you how happy that makes me because that stool used to belong to my grandmother and that chair came with my parents when they moved here from England. hair feelings

I was sprinting through some dry hair treatments on Pinterest, when I picked up something along the lines of ALCOHOL and NOT GOOD FOR DRY HAIR. I decided to check my hair products. Not a single one was alcohol-free! Isn’t this something I should know? And yet I seem to forget about it everytime I’m in a shop. Dry and unruly hair can be such a nuisance. With some things like my hair, I really don’t want the hassle. A few weeks ago, around the time I decided to put a mashed avocado all over my head and get the freakiest allergic reaction, I stopped using products and started using ingredients from my kitchen-and ones that I am not allergic too. I am very new to the natural hair treatment world but since doing a little research -plus discovering food I can eat to nurture my hair- I have found that honey and olive oil works absolute bloody wonders for my super dry hair! Honestly! It is amazing, so cheap, so easy anyone can do it! Mix as much honey and olive oil as you think your hair may need. I need loads! make sure your hair is damp and clean and then apply from top to bottom- mainly bottom if you have dry ends like me- and leave for 30 minutes. Tie it in a bun and relax. Then all you do is rinse. I don’t shampoo or condition after because I find my hair agrees with just these two simple ingredients. I am so excited about trying out other natural hair and body treatments. But maybe not avocado ones. READ MORE

porridge and lights

We’ve been jamming to a winter vibe here at home – despite the weather NOT. Christmas decorations are yet to be put up but the fireplace has been lit multiple evenings, seasonal jingles and oldies have been playing all day and porridge has been on the menu. I would have posted this under In the Kitchen but it’s such a simple heartwarming food, it need not be treated as more than just that. Recently I managed to find those brilliant Ella’s Kitchen smoothies in a pouch, which I used frequently when Georgie was younger and all he could swallow was pureed foods. Such a great alternative when you’re out of fruit. READ MORE

We’re on TV!

Earlier last month, I received a phone call from a good friend of ours who owns a post- production company. He said his team was scouting locations for an upcoming TV ad and they would like to see our home as a possible candidate. Despite this new house of ours being nowhere near finished as far as my high interior expectations are concerned, I agreed. A lovely lady showed up the next day to take some pictures of our bedroom, Georgie’s bedroom and the living room, which were spaces they needed for the ad. She also took pictures and videos of Georgie and me! Turns out they needed a couple of people to be in the ad too. More specifically, a mummy and her baby to join two other mothers with their babies, who would also be part of the project. The ad would be for nappies (diapers, for my American friends) and Georgie and I would be IN IT! The actual confirmation didn’t come until two days before they were set to shoot, so I didn’t really have time to fully digest what a truly amazing experience this turned out to be for us. Georgie and me on an average day- –except for the makeup, hair, new clothes and a taped t-shirt on G. I am so glad I didn’t wimp out and say ‘no’ because I absolutely love the end result. The new Nannies ad is playing on Cyprus TV channels as of yesterday, so I can finally put it on the blog along with so many other sweet memories. I hope you like it!

our bedtime routine

When mothers get together they talk about a variety of issues concerning their children. Behaviour and food are hot subjects. But one I have noticed that almost always takes poll position is the matter of sleep. As you can imagine, everyone has their own opinion and strategy but that’s only because this really is a multi-facted matter, just ask any parent. We talk about the time the little ones go to bed, what type of bed they sleep in or do they sleep in your bed, do you give them milk or water before they go to bed and also if their child wakes up in the middle of the night requesting water or milk. The list goes on, I swear. What I have noticed by engaging with many new mothers is the need for a routine. Georgie has had one since he was six months old and as strange as this may seem, almost every night we follow the same routine. Of course it differs a little as time goes by but we do our best to stick to the the guidelines. If Georgie has had a full day with no napping, our bedtime routine will begin roughly around 5 and finish at 6, when he is ready to hit the sack. He plays in the bath with his dinosaurs and tractor. Then I help him into his pyjamas and finally we read in my bed. My boy is then carried into this dimly lit bedroom where he has some milk and gets into bed. He sleeps up to 12 hours giving papa and me time to enjoy a meal and an evening to ourselves. Establishing healthy sleep habits can do wonders for parents.
