Motherhood

Life lately

This little one is four months already. He’s not yet sleeping through the night. I’m not too happy about that. But I keep telling myself that this is the last time I will go through the baby phase. That makes things easier…until he wakes me up an hour later. And then I go back to talking to myself. It’s a vicious cycle.

I managed to squeeze in a hair appointment to get my roots done last week. I’m lucky that I have very few grey hairs – so I can get away with it- but since I decided to go lighter I need my hairdresser more than just twice a year to keep my curls from turning brassy and yellowy. He does a fantastic job dyeing my hair and keeping it on the natural side.

This week we celebrated James’s second birthday. Close friends and family gathered to eat pizza and cake -cheesecake and carrot cake and the most amazing chocolate cake James’s godmother makes- and sing him happy birthday, which it turns out he doesn’t like because he cried soon after everyone began singing. Like, real crying. Not quite sure what that’s all about. But on the day of his birthday, papa, Georgie, Danny and I gathered  round the last piece of chocolate cake and sang him our version and this time there were no tears.

My biggest boy always asks me how he can help out in the kitchen. He makes me so proud although most times I say ‘that’s ok darling, I’m done’. Mainly because I am usually in a rush to finish dinner and of course I always hate myself for not taking the extra time to ‘allow’ him to help. But then there are moments when I’m not so stressed out and he does help and I love him for it. He loves chopping up a salad. We got him this little knife for Christmas and he uses it whenever he needs to cut up a cucumber or a bell pepper. He can also make himself a sandwich and some toast too.

I am a massive Roald Dahl fan. So you would think I am well aware of the fact that my kids are named after characters of his books! Well I wasn’t until Georgie pointed it out. He has an awesome box set of Roald Dahl books that a good friend of mine gave him ages ago. I love her for that and many other things she has got for my kids. Like this hand-me down t-shirt Danny is rocking which used to belong to Georgie.

Who has time for a facial? Not me. And while I love a good DIY mask, every now and then, while I’m at the supermarket, I’ll pick up a face mask and slap it on my face once all three boys are down for the night. This one was supposed to hide open pores. It didn’t. And what is worse is that for the whole 15 min I had it on I was dreading that Georgie would walk in and find me just sitting there in the dark. So I couldn’t even relax!

Every evening, once James is down for the night -he’s the first to go- Georgie asks to hold Danny. He absolutely adores his baby brother and often asks to sleep with him. ‘I’ll give you 50 euros to let him sleep in my bed,’ he once wrote on a piece of paper and slipped it under my bedroom door. If only he knew how tempted I was to take him up on that offer. ha!

June. That week it rained and was cold one minute but hot the next. Outfit confusion. And also the only time it rained so hard while I was on the motorway I had to stop the car and pull over. I was so scared because I couldn’t see a thing and so I decided to park on the hard shoulder and wait it out.

One minute they’re all over each other, being extra nice and loving. And the next…well, you get the picture.

Treated myself to a new pair of sunglasses, which I managed to purchase with the two little ones in tow! Now if that doesn’t scream commitment to fashion what the hell does?!

Georgie got a haircut this month. He had been banging on lately about having shorter hair so in the end we said ‘fine!’. I took him to get his locks cut and as I watched his beautiful hair fall to the ground I looked up and he had the biggest smile on his face. He was so happy and that’s all that mattered. Besides one of the other two are definitely going to have long hair, right? He also got his second karate belt and couldn’t have been more chuffed.

Most afternoons are spent like this. My boys and I, eating, playing, reading, shouting, cooking, baking, crying, laughing and everything in between.
