let's play, on our island

Little Kickers Cyprus

DSC_1228Months ago, before Georgie turned four, I noticed him kicking a ball around outside. He was playing on his own, muttering to himself, kicking the ball to the wall, sometimes asking Tano, our dog, if he wants to play too. Moments later he came indoors, went to the toilet and emerged with slightly wet hair and pulled-up sleeves.

‘What’s going on, Georgie? You OK?’

‘Yes.’

‘What’s with the wet hair?’

‘I’m playing football, mummy. All footballers have wet hair!’

His uncle bought him one of those portable goal nets and since then he’s developed quite an obsession with the game, begging papa to play with him whenever he gets a chance. We agreed it was time we enrolled our little one in a class. Obviously, being four years old, options are limited but that wasn’t a problem for me because I already knew where he could learn about teamwork and how he could develop a love of sports in a pressure-free environment. The latter is the most important aspect as far as I’m concerned, making Little Kickers the perfect candidate.

If you’ve been following for a while, you’ll probably remember that time I took Georgie to a LK class when he was 18 months. Needless to say, we were there for some full-on footy fun and nothing more serious; at 18 months, kids are welcome to Little Kickers and included in a group made up of other children not exceeding the age of two and three months. This is precisely what LK is all about; it is a pre-school football academy. Nothing similar exists in Cyprus and didn’t in the UK either when one woman, in 2002, noticed the gap in the market and founded Little Kickers.

DSC_1233With a network of 1500 coaches and 210 franchises in 16 countries, the brand is a huge success because it has incorporated the knowledge of FA qualified football coaches as well as experts in child development. Together they have created programmes specifically designed for pre-school kids from the ages of 18 months to seven years old.

DSC_1217DSC_1245The first thing I noticed when Georgie attended a class was the positivity and relaxed atmosphere. Kids are given a fantastic introduction to sports in general, NOT JUST FOOTBALL. They are encouraged to use their imagination, they are encouraged to use their minds. Learning colours, numbers, following rules and working with other children to form a team are all absolutely essential at this age. And Little Kickers does a great job of successfully bringing all those crucial parts into a 45-minute class that my son full-heartedly loves!
