Cyprus, Food, on our island

Cypriot and Proud

We Cypriots have a silly tendency: We stick to what we like and this is especially true of food. We like going to the same restaurants, tavernas, cafes and pubs forgoing some excellent choices that are now finally more available on the island.

I admit to often getting stuck in a rut when a decision has to be made about eating destinations. There are times when I fancy a favourite dish at a favourite spot but more often than not I love experimenting and will go out of my way to try something new.

Because I’m scared I might forget

I have a diary I plan to give to Georgie when he’s older. I’ve had it since I was pregnant. In the beginning I would write about doctor appointments and various stuff papa and I would do before he came into our lives. Later on I would write about his baby ways and the many sleepless nights. However lately I have not written anything. I felt a pang of anxiety recently when I tried to remember something Georgie said that made me laugh and I couldn’t. Why didn’t I write it down just like I do with everything else? So these little notes are for me and my baby because I’m scared I might forget.

Do you teach your kids about strangers?

My brother’s girlfriend sent me this video last week. I think it’s a topic worth discussing.

Here’s the synopsis: A man goes to a playground with a fluffy white puppy. He approaches random mothers and explains that he is conducting a social experiment to see if kids will willingly walk away with a stranger with a smile on his face and a puppy in his arms or not. Every single mummy is certain that their child will put what they have learnt about talking to strangers into action and run away, returning to their parents’ safe embrace. Of course, they don’t. One by one, the kids take the man’s hand and walk off, leaving their mothers gobsmacked, to say the least.

My grab and go quick and healthy breakfast

Since Georgie started school we don’t get a chance to enjoy breakfast together anymore. There’s just about enough time to pack his school bag, prepare whatever I will be needing for the day, make myself presentable and head out. I am a huge breakfast fan and will never limit myself to just toast or eggs or cereal even though Georgie could easily live off just the first and latter. I’ve been known to eat roasted chicken and potatoes in the morning. Honestly, anything will do, as long as it keeps me going until lunchtime.

Tips on a fuss-free bedtime routine

Originally, this was meant to be a general post on sleep issues. But I scrapped that idea. It seemed silly because there is no way that everything sleep-related can be jammed into one post. Instead I will focus on a very simple question I am often asked: What do I do when my child refuses to sleep? The never-ending battles and arguments are emotionally-draining and exhausting. But honestly, they needn’t be. It will take time and effort on your part but in the end please know that you are making a huge investment because once you make a point of teaching your child how to sleep, it sticks for life.
