Hatty, the vegetarian tiger

Georgie loves books. Basically he loves when I read to him. Every evening before we head upstairs he makes me promise to read him a ‘big book, mummy, not a little one’. Once we’re nestled in his bed and I begin to read I always notice the way he stares at me, my mouth and the expressions I make while reading as if my face can tell a better story than the pictures. I read to him every day which means we go through an impressive amount of used, borrowed and new books. Recently, in a bid to mix things up I stocked his bookshelf with storybooks I had when I was little. Big and chunky with bare pages and packed with various stories from Tom Thumb to The Snow Queen, they seem worlds away from the versions published today. I have had to explain what ‘shan’t’ means on more than one occasion! Man, I feel old sometimes.

Hopscotch

I’m a huge fan of classic games. Especially outdoor ones that meant the world to me growing up. Hide and Seek, Marbles, Simon Says, Jump Rope and of course, Hopscotch. I have no memories of playing hopscotch as a child in England but fast forward to our move to Cyprus and there are plenty. At school, at the playground, at home, in the middle of a dead-end road I have fond memories of a chalk in my hand and hopping to and fro with my friends for what seemed like hours!

I swear, every two to three weeks someone in this family is sick. Please let this be the last of it.

The organic lollipop

Anytime we’re in line at the supermarket and I see a lollipop stand within kids’ reach, I see red. It annoys me, to say the least because no matter how hard we, as parents, try to spare our kids teeth from all sorts of artificial sweeteners that only wreak havoc, we are surrounded by unhealthy treat options all day, every day. I’ve learnt my lesson though and now I always stock my handbag with a few healthier options like these organic lollipops.
