Why should you shop small? Because when you buy from a small business an actual person does a little happy dance.

- Cakeology: Apart from exceptional cakes, here you will find the brilliant idea of cookie decoration kits. The mama boss over at Cakeology sent the boys an Easter version of the cookie decoration kit and they loved it. And the cookies were so freakin’ delicious. Looking forward to getting some kits for the kids in my big extended family.

- Fudge Bites Handmade: Sold, right? A small mama run business with a specialty in making fudge, protein balls and peanut butter and cakes too. Oh my! For the upcoming holidays they have prepared gift boxes, gift jars, peanut butter gift sets, fudge bags and party bags and anything you want really. I would definitely be happy to receive any of those.
- Yummy Jams: I love discovering new small businesses especially when they specialise in something yummy like jam. Made locally, here you will find what look like utterly delicious jams, jellies and chutneys for all tastes. They use fresh local fruits, nuts and spices to create little pots of greatness like banana jam, rose petal jam, cherry and chilli jelly and spicy fig, ginger and raisins chutney.

- Conbakes: I know most of us like to bake during the holidays but when I see cakes like these I don’t even want to bother. The textures, the colours, the overall designs are incredible. I haven’t had the chance to try them out but this place was recommended by quite a few people so I would definitely keep them on my list of small cake businesses. I hear the carrot cake is amazing.

I swear this stuff smells like heaven. You can chose from ready-made themed sets, which is what kept us busy during lockdown and also find Xmas themed sets with cutter shapes and decorative bits and bobs. My mum bought one for all her grandchildren last Christmas and they loved it.

- Natali Art Crochet: The woman and creator behind this shop won my heart over the moment I saw a little Yoda she crocheted. Seriously. One gift is off my list already. It’s also worth mentioning that not only are her designs genuinely gorgeous, crocheting is her therapy as she suffers from MS. You know there’s a lot of love in those beautiful creations.

- Stories, Learn Feel Play: Educational toys and games come to the forefront with this little shop where as the name suggests, your kids will learn and feel their way through play. There’s a special focus on puzzles, which I love doing with my eldest child but the highlight of this shop are the therapeutic tools for speech therapy and occupational therapy and the sensory toys, pillows and weighted blankets. And I love the write n’ chew pencils and pens, perfect for those little ones who love to chew.

- J’s Second Hand and Vintage Boutique: I am dying to get to this new shop in Old Nicosia. I used to shop there before the owner went away. You can also find men and kids stuff too.
- Dd by Daniella Georgiou: I discovered this products and accessories designer a few years ago and immediately fell in love with her creations. Every piece is made locally, with a team of skilled craftswomen, working to produce pieces that include seamless soft bras with no underwire (amen!) that have a natural shape instead of a sculpted one, comfortable panties, loungewear and nightwear. A truly great option for a unique Xmas gift. Check out their website to find local stockists or order online.

I am especially excited to try the sports bras because I am always on the lookout for good ones and judging from the little bit of research I have done, Veren’s ones look really good.

A massive thank you to everyone who participated in this shopping guide. My plan is to keep it updated, add more and allow it to be used as a guide and a reminder to spend your money wisely, not just over Christmas.

Top tip on how to support small businesses: You do not have to buy something from a small business to support it – though obviously it’s the best way by far. You can support in other ways such as giving their social media posts a like and a share, tagging your friends in their posts or pages. And writing reviews on Google and Facebook always helps.

// CRAFTS TO DO AT HOME //
Christmas tree slime
A fun sensory activity to make for Christmas – kids will love making their very own “Christmas Tree” with this easy homemade slime recipe.
- WHAT YOU WILL NEED
- 1 bottle of green glitter glue
- ½ tablespoon of baking soda
- Green food colouring
- Red, green and gold sequins
- Contact lens solution
- First, add your bottle of green glitter glue to a bowl.
- Add in your baking soda and water and mix.
- Now add in any sequins, glitter or stars to your slime.
- Now slowly add in a small amount of contact lens solution.
- It’s time to play with your slime. Stretch it and turn it into a Christmas tree!
Make a Festive Snow Globe
- WHAT YOU WILL NEED
- Plastic container
- Any figure of your choice (e.g a snowman, Santa Clause, a Christmas tree).
- Baby oil
- Water
- Glitter/snowflakes
- Hot glue gun
- Start by filling all of the plastic container, but the top ring, with baby oil.
- Next, add your choice of snowflakes or glitter. I suggest only adding a pinch of glitter or the globe will make an intense snowstorm which makes it harder to see our snowman!
- Then add in both large and small confetti snowflakes for a really cool effect.
- Use a hot glue gun to attach the snowman figure to the inside of the lid.
- Your snow globe is now ready. You can turn is upside down to make it snow!
Pinecone Christmas Tree Craft
- WHAT YOU WILL NEED
- Pinecones
- Green Craft Paint
- Paintbrush
- Liquid Glue
- Glitter
- Pom Poms
- Additional Embellishments
-
- If using pinecones collected from outdoors, give them a quick rinse and shake to remove dirt & debris. Let dry completely.
- Paint the whole pinecone with the green paint. Clean the brush and allow to dry completely.
- Use the clean paintbrush to brush glue onto the tips of each “leaf” (or use a glue gun).
- Decorate with the pom-poms, glitter and other cool embellishments you may have!
Christmas popcorn
This Christmas Popcorn is the perfect Christmas treat. It’s simple to make and taste amazing. You can load it with Christmas coloured M&Ms but you can top it with any candy or sprinkle!
Step one: Start by preparing a baking sheet with some parchment paper. Your popcorn will be pretty sticky and need some time to dry. If you let it dry in the bowl you may end up with one big popcorn ball.
Step two: Place popped popcorn in a large mixing bowl.
Step three: Next melt your butter in a saucepan and once melted add in mini marshmallows and melt making sure to stir constantly. Once melted pour over popcorn and gently mix.
Step four: Once your popcorn is coated add it to your prepared baking sheet and sprinkle on M&Ms. Allow cooling, then break the popcorn into pieces and enjoy your movie night with this festive coloured popcorn!
