Furniture shopping. Lots of reading. Walks to the schoolyard. And an amazing new app discovery.
books
One of the books I’ve been dying to finish is John Holt’s Learning All The Time. I picked up the name after doing a bit of research on the matter of learning. Not the ABC 123 kind of learning but a different kind. The honest kind. The no pressure kind.
Now Georgie’s becoming more and more aware of his surroundings and beginning to need more stimulation, I worry that what I am providing is not enough. I hear about parents teaching their kids to recite the alphabet by the age of two! This scares me. Not just because it’s feckin freaky but also because I secretly feel inadequate and stupid for allowing my child to play with the dog instead of shoving a book up his nose. I’m not belittling anyone here but that just doesn’t seem natural to me. The same way the schooling system doesn’t. Why are we making learning an obligation instead of a basic instinct?
These links caught my eye. I thought they would make for a great upcoming holiday online gorge session i have planned for when I’m lounging on the beach or by the pool.
I loved this. Best book closing lines.
Things aren’t well on Planet Earth. We know that. Doesn’t hurt to be reminded though.
I’ve become a huge fan of Instagram. I might be a bit ‘late’ discovering this amazing app but better late than never, right? With the help of special filters you can upload beautiful pictures, very 70s and very cool, for everyone to admire and take inspiration from. I picked up this rocking babygro at the Werchter Festival and found it complimented my Smurf-coloured toenails, perfectly. I would like to say: Look at my beautiful new maxi dress but I fear Tano and his new ‘haircut’ have stolen my thunder. Papa was supposed to drop him off before we left on our trip, for a shampoo and blowdry. Georgie’s godfather, who was kind enough to take Tano in while we were away, called me that night to tell me that he was convinced the girl at the pet store place gave him the wrong dog. He sent me a picture and papa got an earful. But if I’m being honest, i quite like it. No more long thick dog hairs and he seems happier and lighter. Sushi delivery! It was a Friday ritual for months before Georgie was born and unfortunately it was never picked up again. Until this Friday when it was sushi and movies all the way. Vintage-inspired postcards from Amsterdam. An extract from John Holt’s Learning All The Time, an eye-opening book on how children learn by themselves how to read and write. I haven’t finished it yet. A few months ago I discovered Goodbyn, a cute tupperware style lunch bag. So far I’ve taken it to the beach and the park, many times. Basically it’s perfect for snacks and a light lunch. I’m hoping it will come in handy when Georgie needs one for pre-school.
Since I became pregnant I’ve been keeping a diary. For Georgie. I don’t know why but a couple of months after I found out I was pregnant and when we knew it was a boy, I suddenly felt the urge to ‘talk’ to him. I felt I had things to say. Even if it is just mentioning a doctor’s appointment or a film I have watched, every few weeks I open this little leather pad and ‘talk’ to my baby. Everytime, I imagine him reading it and asking me to fill him in on the details of events I have written about. It’s funny to think how far away that time is but it wasn’t that long ago that I bought this little leather pad and sat down to write the first time.
