Our day was nearing the end and I had been toying with the idea of splat painting since the morning. I decided our cold concrete garden wall was in need of colour so Georgie and I headed out, armed with paints, soft balls and a roll of paper. Warning: this is extremely messy. It involves paint. Splatting. If you are game anyway, of course you don’t need a concrete wall to begin. Tape some paper on the wall or hang a big piece of cloth that needs cheering up. The end result is so good and it was fun for both of us. I think we’ll be doing it again soon but this time with another batch of colours.
toddler activities
Yay for painting, right? It keeps kids occupied for a ridiculous amount of time and there is unlimited creativity involved. It is something that Georgie and I do often. We love painting stones, sticks, cardboard boxes, wooden toys and anything else I can get my hands on. But then there are times when creating a beautiful mess is not what I have in mind and the last thing I need is a toddler running around with black paint on his hands. Enter Water Painting. It deserves to come in capitals because it is such an awesome no-brainer. All you need is a bowl of water, paint brushes and somewhere to set those little ones free. The only problem I had with this activity was trying to explain why the painting was disappearing. But trust me, if there’s water in the mix, you won’t get any complaints.
The obsession Georgie has with dinosaurs is wearing off. At least as far as favourite movie characters are concerned. Georgie is, of course, very young to understand what Monsters Inc is all about but I couldn’t resist watching it with him one afternoon. He was hooked within minutes. Since then Mike and Sulley have been topics of many discussions and finally painting and creating one afternoon. All we needed was a box, some paper cups leftover from his birthday party, glue and those sticky eyes, which we use often. Sometimes I’ll just stick a pair on a piece of paper and Georgie creates around them, making faces and imaginary creatures. He is at that drawing phase right now and you better believe I love it!
A month ago, while we were decorating our Christmas tree, Georgie asked for pancakes for dinner. So, I dropped what I was doing and headed to the kitchen with him to whip up a batch. Georgie stood on his little stool and waited for me to gather all the ingredients. He then helped me scoop out the exact measurements with that cute toddler steadiness and then he cracked open two eggs with one hand. We began mixing away when my mother-in-law began laughing. She couldn’t believe how well Georgie was handling himself and the whole process. He is indeed a great sous chef and I could not be prouder. I smile when he starts cleaning and cups his hand under the kitchen counter to catch those crumbs.
I love the sudden explosion of excitement that comes with a Friday. Today I’m feeling a little more excited than usual after spending a majority of the last two weeks indoors. I think it’s also because I finally have my strength back and can comfortably get back into my indoor-routines with Georgie. Organising, rearranging furniture, fixing things and cleaning, reading and being superheroes. This is what we do indoors. Cheers to good health.
