let's play, on our island

Melios’ zoo

Is anyone else enjoying this absolutely fantastic weather? We knew Sunday would be a beautiful sunny day (thanks weather app!) so we made plans to take Georgie out for the day. We piled into the car and headed for a quick lunch before making our way to Melios Zoo just outside of Nicosia. I know its been a popular spot for families for years but for some reason our family had never been. Can I just say how pleasantly surprised we all were? The zoo is packed with thousands of colourful stunning birds that will make you marvel at nature and its ability to create such creatures while the hyenas, buffalos, zebras and kangaroos are definitely worth seeing. The grounds are clean, gorgeous and overflowing with trees, bushes and aromatic shrubs. There’s an impressive playground situated right next to a cafeteria so after our long walk around the zoo, we sat down for a cup of tea while Georgie played. Overall a day well-spent, thoroughly enjoyed by kids and grown-ups.

Happy new year!

Happy new year to all! I can happily say that the two weeks of holidays were immensely enjoyed despite the unavoidable insanity that comes with the season not to mention the variety of ailments. I focused on all that matters. My dad was home and well for the first time in three Christmases which, of course, meant the world to me and Georgie made every day completely and utterly magical especially with his endless singing. Since starting pre-school I miss him and just being at home with him so over the holidays I couldn’t get enough of our time together. Prepping for Christmas lunch, at my parents’ house, was an overwhelming moment for me because I was tasked with cooking the gammon. It was my first time, the gammon was meant to feed 20 people and up until Christmas Eve I was still franticly searching for a recipe because I refused my mum’s help. ‘I can do it. No help necessary, ‘ I told her. I ended up boiling the gammon in two litres of coca cola for two hours! Apparently, this is a very popular way to cook gammon and apparently, it works. You should look it up.

In the kitchen// Proper custard

On one particularly chilly night in between episodes of The Walking Dead, papa requested custard. I searched through my pantry only to discover a tin of expired custard powder. Bother. A bowl of warm custard was not destined to be eaten that night, however, I thought it was the perfect excuse to finally make my own. From scratch. I turned to trusty old Jamie Oliver because custard is, after all, a traditional English dessert, referred to by the French as crème anglaise, and who better than Jamie to ease me into my first go.
