How to travel comfortably with a toddler

Going on a trip with your toddler can be an exhilarating adventure, allowing you to introduce them to great experiences and help you create memories you will cherish forever. However, from packing to getting on the road or onto a plane, you will definitely find yourself managing tantrums and applying patience. Whether you’re visiting family in a distant country or going on a weekend trip, there are some tips and tricks you can apply so you can have an enjoyable time with your toddler. Here are a few.

  • Have a plan

When travelling with your toddler, you need to have a good plan in place.  First, decide on the activities you want to do and places you would like to go. Are they family-friendly, and do they have play areas for your toddler? If the travel distance is very far, consider how you would cater to your child’s interests so they don’t disturb other people. It would be helpful to have a list of their essentials so you don’t forget anything. If this is their first time travelling, be prepared for jet lags and restlessness. As a parent, you can get caught up in attending to your child and forget certain important things. Consider booking your reservations and flight ahead of time. If you’re going on a road trip, have your car serviced and ensure the child safety features are intact. Finally, plan out their diet if they are picky eaters.

  • Pack well

For a successful trip with your toddler, it is essential to pack well. Having everything they need to stay calm, comfortable, and happy can give you peace of mind. After compiling your list, begin packing essentials like diapers, wipes, clothing, and medications. When it comes to clothing, select options that can be mixed and matched so your luggage doesn’t get too heavy. Also, consider the weather and pick the appropriate gear to keep them cool or warm. It would be helpful to have a mini first-aid kit for unforeseen emergencies. For their entertainment, you can add snacks, their favourite toys, and books. If your toddler has a lucky toy, add it so it can keep them calm in stressful situations. An aeroplane stroller will also come in handy if you want to navigate through a crowded airport or boarding area. Fortunately, they are lightweight, so you don’t need to worry about having a heavy suitcase.

  • Find ways to distract them

You might be wondering how to distract a toddler during a flight or on a road trip. Well, it doesn’t take much to do so. When on the road, you can play a compilation of their most loved rhymes and songs. You can also indulge them in a colouring session if they want a hands-on activity. When they begin to whimper or cry for your attention, take out a book and read to them. While interactive toys that make sounds can disturb other passengers on a plane, they are perfect on a car ride. Finally, download educational videos or games on your tablet and keep them occupied with them.

Travelling with a toddler can be nerve-wracking, but with the right preparations, you can ensure a peaceful journey.
