How to create a bedroom sanctuary

Having at least one room in your home that is a sanctuary, a place you can go for some well-earned peace and quiet and that feels wondering when you do, is vital. Without this one special room, you will never feel truly comfortable in your own home, and you will never be able to ultimately relax and pay attention to your own self-care. Even in a room that you feel is comfortable, if it’s not entirely right, your subconscious won’t be able to rest, and you’ll still be tense and tired.

The bedroom is an ideal space to turn into a sanctuary since it is associated with rest and relaxation already. Plus, it’s possibly the one room in your home that you can escape to anyway. With that in mind, here are some ideas that will help you to create a bedroom sanctuary to keep your mental health in good shape.

Keep It Simple

Keep it simple is one of the fundamental tenets of all interior design, but when it comes to your bedroom sanctuary, it is even more important. With too much ‘stuff’ cluttering up the room, you won’t be able to truly relax and be at peace with yourself. Too many things around you will, as we mentioned above, burrow into your subconscious and make you wary of being in the room, ruining the relaxation you might have wanted. Instead of seeing all the piles of books and clothes and children’s toys and knick knacks all over the place, when everything is simple and uncluttered, your mind will be much better able to focus on the task of relaxation than anything else.

Decide what it is you need in your bedroom and what would be better elsewhere (or even thrown out entirely). If you have no storage then think about investing in some gorgeous built in wardrobes – everything will be neat and tidy and stowed away so you can concentrate on relaxing.

Use Calming Colours

No matter how clean and uncluttered your bedroom is, it will never be a true sanctuary if you use a lot of bright colours, or even simply colours that don’t evoke a calming mood. You might love the colour red, but having it in your bedroom isn’t a good idea if you want it to be a calming space; blue or green (and always in light shades such as pastel) are much better.

The paint colour you use in your bedroom can change the mood entirely, and it might be that just changing the current colour to one that has more calming properties is all you need to do to create a sanctuary to enjoy when you need to. This is a low-cost way to get the peace and relaxation that is so much needed in so many people’s lives.

Include Texture

If you can incorporate a wide range of different textures into your bedroom sanctuary, you’ll be making it a wonderful place to spend some time. These textures should feel good but also look good and could include textured wall coverings, blinds, exposed brick or beams, a thick rug, cushions made from textured fabric, and much more.
