9 ways to make your child’s birthday extra special

When you’re a child, there is nothing more exciting than your birthday (except maybe Christmas). After the last couple of years, your children might have had to miss out on having much of a birthday celebration, especially if they couldn’t have a party, go out somewhere special, or even see their friends. If you want to make this year’s birthday extra special and be the world’s best parent, try some of these ideas.

  1. Have a scavenger hunt. Make opening their gifts even more exciting by building up the anticipation even more. Hide their gifts all over the house and garden, and give them some clues to help them find each gift.
  2. Wrap their lunch. If your child has to go to school on their birthday, keep the birthday fun going by wrapping each individual item that you pack into their lunch in wrapping paper. Kids will think this is great fun. You can put some special things in their lunch that you would’nt normally give them too, like a cupcake, or even a small, extra gift.
  3. Serve their meals on a special birthday plate. You can lots of special plates online, whether you choose a pretty design from Etsy or one with a photo printed on it. If you’re creative, you could make one with a plain, ceramic plate, and some porcelain pens. These pens can be bought online or in craft stores.
  4. Make a special birthday chair. Make your child feel like the birthday king or queen by making a chair. Attach some balloons, streamers and a sign to a chair for your to sit in for meals or while they’re opening gifts.
  5. Fill their bedroom with balloons. Use helium ballons to get them to float around the room, or blow up a few to cover the floor. Buy themed balloons from All Fun Parties
  6. Give them a birthday bath. If your child likes bathtime, make it extra special. Buy some fun bubble bath or a bath bomb. Fill the bath with balloons, or add food colouring to the water. Crack some glowsticks and drop them in for a bath that glows.
  7. Write a birthday message on the bathroom mirror. You can go traditional and write in lipstick, or if you want less mess, use a dry-erase marker or a post-it note. Your child will love seeing a special note when they first get up on their birthday morning.
  8. Give them a birthday crown or tiara. You could buy a pre-made option, or you could make one yourself out of a simple foam crown from the craft store, and paint, glitter, and stickers. If you have other children, you could get them to make their siblings birthday crown.
  9. Do a yearly interview. These can be a really sweet and funny way to see how your child changes as they grow up, that you can look back on each year. Write a few simple questions about things they like and thinking about, and save their answers in a scrapbook. Ask the same questions next year and see how their answers change.
