Life can be – and should be – a beautiful, uplifting, and exciting adventure, rich in possibility and a sense of wonder. Unfortunately, it’s quite common for us to become increasingly jaded as time goes on when confronted by the normal disappointments and frustrations that naturally tend to arise over the course of everyday life. It’s a terrible thing to end up in a position where you feel as if your sense of possibility has been lost, and you can’t motivate yourself to be proactive and optimistic.
While there are all sorts of different things that can be done in order to help regain a sense of possibility – and while every individual situation will differ substantially – here are a few tips for regaining a sense of possibility that are likely to be helpful for a broad number of people. But you must remember to understand your audience when you are trying to express yourself and get a message through.
Take up hobbies that help you to shift your perspective
If you feel jaded, and as if your sense of possibility in life has been lost, one of the most important things to do is to put yourself in situations that can help to shift your perspective, and to get you out of your own habitual thought patterns.
One great thing to try out, in this regard, is to simply take up hobbies that put you in a variety of different situations, and that get you to stop ruminating so much.
These hobbies might include things like gardening and researching how to get rid of creeping woodsorrel, or they might include things like painting or woodcarving.
Do things that you find difficult and daunting
Easily one of the best ways of expanding your sense of what’s possible in life, is to directly challenge your limiting beliefs and the “learned helplessness” you may be experiencing, by making a point of getting out there and doing things that you find difficult and daunting on a regular basis.
Of course, this doesn’t mean that you should be putting your life at risk. But it’s often by putting ourselves in situations that we feel daunted by, that we discover we are capable of a lot more than we had originally believed.
Perhaps you always tell yourself that you’re terribly uncharismatic and could never do public speaking. But then, after taking a course in public speaking, you begin to believe that you actually might have what it takes after all.
Any time you overcome a perceived limitation, you expand your overall sense of what’s possible.
Spend time around positive and energetic people
The people we surround ourselves with have a tremendous impact on how we perceive ourselves and the world at large, and how we shape our sense of what’s possible, among other things.
By spending time around positive and energetic people on a regular basis, it’s likely that your sense of what’s possible will significantly increase.
If, on the other hand, you only surround yourself with negative and fatalistic people, it is unfortunately likely that your sense of what’s possible will diminish.
